Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has been under fire for more than a week due to recent revelations tying him to alleged Chinese spy Christine Fang.
Republican lawmakers are ramping up pressure on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to remove Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee, but Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) declared that Swalwell should ” just resign from Congress” altogether.
Swalwell’s position on the Intelligence Committee makes his alleged affair with Fang even more concerning, though Pelosi has refused even to consider the risk that the California Democrat’s position on the committee presents.
Paul told Fox News on Wednesday, “He was the most over-the-top critic of President Trump on Russia collusion, and it turns out he’s sleeping with a Chinese spy.”
“I mean, my goodness. The hypocrisy,” Paul continued. “It’s appalling, and he really should be red-faced and ashamed of himself and really probably ought to just resign from Congress.”
When Fox News’s Sandra Smith asked Paul if Swalwell should step down from his position on the committee, Paul responded that he “probably ought to resign from the intelligence committee,” but if he refuses to do so, “he should be removed from the intelligence committee” by House leadership.
According to the Washington Examiner, “Seventeen Republicans in the House have sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi urging her to remove Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee.”
For her part, Pelosi has said that she has no concerns about Swalwell’s potential security compromise, and Swalwell himself has largely ignored the accusations.
