Outgoing GOP Rep. announces intent to ‘disaffiliate’ from the Republican party

Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-MI), who already announced that he is retiring from the House at the end of his term, also shocked the GOP by announcing on Monday that he’s resigning from the Republican party altogether.

Mitchell has already established himself as a “never-Trumper” in recent years, and has grown increasingly frustrated with the direction of the GOP in general, especially in regard to the outcome of the November election.

The Michigan lawmaker announced his intention to “disaffiliate” from the Republican party in a press released on Monday.

“It is unacceptable for political candidates to treat our election system as though we are a third-world nation and incite distrust of something so basic as the sanctity of our vote,” Mitchell wrote, though he did admit that there is evidence that
“both administrative errors and even some fraudulent voting likely occurred this year.”

Taking up similar rhetoric to many GOP leaders that gave up on Trump soon after election day, Mitchell continued: “If Republican leaders collectively sit back and tolerate unfounded conspiracy theories and ‘stop the steal’ rallies without speaking out for our electoral process …. our nation will be damaged.”

Mitchell’s term ends in January, and his disaffiliation means he will serve out the rest of his time in Congress as an Independent.

Michigan voters have already chosen his successor, Republican Lisa McClain, who will be sworn in at the beginning of the next legislative session.
