Breitbart News reports that John O’Connor, the Republican attorney general of Oklahoma, recently expressed his opinion that there is a “staggering possibility” that Roe v. Wade will be overturned.
Roe is the landmark abortion case in which the U.S. Supreme Court, in the early 1970s, discovered in the U.S. Constitution something that had never been found there before – a woman’s so-called right to have an abortion.
Recently, a draft was leaked of the court’s decision in a case in which the justices are considering the legality of Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. In that draft, which was written by Justice Samuel Alito, the justices overturned Roe.
This draft decision has yet to become a reality. But, during a recent interview on Breitbart News Saturday, O’Connor indicated the likelihood that the justices will overturn Roe.
Speaking about Roe, O’Connor said, “It was a ridiculous decision. It was not a scholarly legal opinion. It was a political popularity contest.”
O’Connor went on to say that, if the court does overturn Roe, then it will “turn the decision back to the people and their elected state legislatures.”
O’Connor later argued: “We shouldn’t have the Supreme Court making policy in the country. They’re supposed to construe laws. The policies are supposed to be embedded in laws by our legislature.”
Regarding the abortion issue, O’Connor said: “We’ve got to keep going until we’ve determined that abortion is the taking of a life and is not legal in America.” The attorney general referred to abortion as a “national sin.”
He said that, in his opinion, “we can find other solutions that don’t involve the taking of a life in a crisis pregnancy.”
