Obama’s set to leave Spotify as three-year contract is expiring

Former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, parlayed his presidency into a lucrative media endeavor on a popular streaming service. That may soon be coming to an end.

The Obamas are shopping for a new deal as their three-year Spotify contract comes to an end, Breitbart reported. The pair hosted their own podcasts and produced others through their Higher Ground Audio company.

The couple signed their deal in June of 2019. However,ย according to Vanity Fair, they are eying other arrangements as the “Obamas are more interested in lifting young new voices than carrying shows themselves, and that this focus hasn’t always aligned with Spotify’s.”

The Obamas’ work includes Barack Obama’s “Renegades: Born in the USA” podcast the former president co-hosted with music legend Bruce Springsteen. The eight-episode endeavor dropped April 5, 2021, to much media fanfare.

Before that, the former first lady hosted her “Michelle Obama Podcast” beginning in July 2020. During its run, she once admitted she had profound animosity toward her husband, Barack Obama. “There were times that I wanted to push Barack out of the window,” she said on her show in September that year.

“And I say that because it’s like, you’ve got to know the feelings will be intense. But that doesn’t mean you quit,” the former first lady said. “And these periods can last a long time. They can last years.” Michelle Obama’s series ended later that month.

This possible parting of ways comes as Spotify is embroiled in controversy over hit podcaster Joe Rogan’s interview with vaccine skeptic Dr. Robert Malone. Several has-been artists have vowed to leave the platform like Joni Mitchell and Eve-6, though Spotify has stood by Rogan, the Washington Post reported.

While the Obamas’ possible exit is being discussed as an opportunity, it’s noteworthy that the couple hasn’t performed as well in the streaming realm as they had in politics. Perhaps they’re searching for a new place to land, knowing their star power is burning out.
