NY dropping mask mandate for work, but not schools

New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul is announcing on Wednesday that the indoor mask mandate will end, but mask-wearing in schools will continue.

Hochul’s move will join Democratic governors in New Jersey, Delaware and other states who are rolling back restrictions this month.

In contrast, California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom will lift the state’s indoor mask mandate next week, but only for those who are vaccinated.

The changes alleged to come from new information that shows mask-wearing is not significantly stopping the spread of the virus.

However, many see a political angle to the decisions. Many governors are up for reelection this year, and midterm elections leave many House Democrats vulnerable under the failures of the Biden administration.

Regardless of the reasons, the majority of Americans are happy to start living more normal lives in states where lockdown measures have been in force for nearly two years.
