Newsom 'outmaneuvers' Biden on gas prices: report

The Washington Examiner's Christian Datoc suggests that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is trying to show up President Joe Biden on the issue of the country's staggering gas prices.

Newsom has done so, Datoc reports, by announcing a plan to hold a special session in December on whether or not to implement new taxes on oil companies.

"Nothing justifies these outrageous and unconscionable prices," Newsom said on Friday.

He continued:

This is just price gouging. They can’t get away with it. They’re fleecing you. They’re taking advantage of you, every single one, every single day. Hundreds of millions of dollars a week they’re putting in their pockets.

Biden, in recent months, has made similar remarks and has threatened action against oil companies that are caught gouging customers. But, so far, we have yet to see any concrete action from his administration.

Accordingly, Datoc suggests that, here, Biden, might be getting some unexpected competition from Newsom on the issue.

Newsom is considered by many to be a presidential hopeful for the Democrats in 2024. Some are looking to him as a candidate to replace Biden, who has lost the support of many Democrats.

Actions suggest that Newsom may be positioning himself for a 2024 run at the presidency. Newsom, however, insists that he will not make such a bid.

"Not happening, no, no, not at all," Newsom recently said. "I've said it in French, Italian. I don't know German. I mean, I cannot say it enough. But thank you. It's humbling. It is sweet. It's a nice thing to be asked. I mean it, and I never trust politicians, so I get why you keep asking.
