Newly-filed federal lawsuit seeks to throw out hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin ballots

Democrats have consistently railed against voter identification laws and have used the cover of coronavirus restrictions to further unverifiable balloting. That strategy could backfire for them, however.

Three Wisconsin voters are suing the state for expanding the “indefinitely confined voters” excuse to allow thousands to cast “illegal votes” without photo ID, the Washington Examiner reported. If they prevail, it could void nearly 800,000 votes in heavily Democratic areas, giving the state’s 10 Electoral College votes to President Donald Trump.

The federal lawsuit filed Thursday states that Milwaukee County, Menominee County, and Dane County unfairly allowed people to vote without valid ID. This is significant as Dane County is home to Madison, the state’s Democratic-stronghold capital, as well as Menominee County which went 1,303 to 278 votes in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

When both Dane County and Milwaukee County clerks suggested the pandemic was enough to claim the “indefinitely confined” exemption back in March, the state Supreme Court found that “advice was legally incorrect” and sided with Republicans. Still, voters were permitted to use the exemption to request absentee primary ballots, and were automatically mailed ballots for the general election based on their claim.

There was also some finagling of those absentee ballots, the lawsuit claims. Although the ballots required witnesses’ signatures with their address on ballot envelopes for validation, one Republican source told the Washington Examiner that clerks were “editing” information on the envelopes.

Wisconsin Elections Commission said that clerks could correct address discrepancies. However, with an unprecedented number of absentee ballots flooding in this election year, there was much more opportunity for voter fraud in such a shady practice as altering witness information.

“Election workers, overwhelmed by the sudden flood of mailed ballots, have less ability to carefully review them to screen out fraudulent ones, creating a substantial risk that fraudulent votes will be counted and vote-dilution disenfranchisement will occur,” the plaintiffs alleged in the lawsuit. In a race that is separated by only about 20,000 votes, any kind of fraud or incompetence is enough to override valid results and flip the state.

Despite the obvious problems with allowing voters to cast ballots without photo ID, the Democrats never waiver in their objection to such commonsense measures. The 2020 presidential election may have finally brought to light what Republicans have always instinctively known about why Democrats are dead-set against it: Their candidates may not get elected without allowing unverified votes.
