New York working on ban for natural gas in buildings, appliances, and heaters

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that her state would lead the way in banning natural gas from buildings, appliances, and heaters by the end of the decade, the Washington Examiner reported. The New York Democrat said this during her "State of the State" address.

Hochul said that the ban would go into effect in 2025, starting with newer, smaller buildings. The requirement would move to larger structures begun or completed by 2028.

"Buildings are the largest source of emissions in our state, accounting for a third of our greenhouse gas output," Hochul claimed. She also touted plans to use a grading system based on energy consumption that would allow property managers to "make informed choices" in cutting back.

This attack on natural gas comes at a time when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is mulling regulations on natural gas stoves. New research has ostensibly linked their use to creating indoor air pollutants.

Gas stoves are a popular choice for home cooks, with nearly 40% of U.S. households choosing them as their preferred fuel. Now the Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization claim that the carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other particulate matter released in cooking are problematic.

There are even claims that methane can leak from the appliances when they're off. All of these emissions have been linked to respiratory problems like asthma.

These assertions have culminated with CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. calling for an outright ban. "Any option is on the table," he said earlier this week, calling the contaminants a "hidden hazard."

"Products that can’t be made safe can be banned,” Trumka said.  The CPSC submitted a request in October for public data on the health concerns associated with cooking with natural gas and has sought solutions, including Trumpka's possible ban.

For now, legislation outlawing gas stoves would not make it through the new GOP-majority House of Representatives. Still, these kinds of pushes from the left often yield results eventually, whether by crook or hook.

The EPA was successful in eliminating the incandescent bulb even as it claimed that was not the aim of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. It explained on its website that the traditional bulb was not outlawed, but instead required to use less energy.

Former President Donald Trump sought to abolish the rule during his administration, the Washington Post reported. "The light’s no good. I always look orange," he quipped of the newer types of lighting such as compact fluorescent and LED.

The pause was short-lived as President Joe Biden's Energy Department reinstated the rule and accelerated its implementation last April. It eliminated many exceptions to the bulbs and doubled down on a requirement to produce 45 lumens per watt, effectively outlawing conventional light bulbs.

The administration claimed it would amount to $3 billion in savings for customers and a reduction of 222 million metric tons of carbon over the next three decades. "The lighting industry is already embracing more energy-efficient products, and this measure will accelerate progress to deliver the best products to American consumers and build a better and brighter future," a statement from Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm proclaimed.

Leftists always insist these types of bans are for their constituents' own good. However, they never bother asking what people actually want, whether it's cooking with gas or turning on a soft-glowing incandescent bulb -- and that's just one more thing that makes them ruthless totalitarians.
