New York City Mayor Eric Adams promises to monitor social media and conduct door-to-door checks on Americans seeking gun permits

New York City is already a hellscape of crime and moral decay. Now an authoritarian crackdown will complete the dystopian motif.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has vowed to interview, monitor social media, and conduct door-to-door checks on people who seek gun permits, the New York Post reported. The crackdown comes at the intersection of new gun laws and a Supreme Court decision that effectively broadened concealed carry rights.

"It is really about using the good, old-fashioned methods of doing investigation," Adams said Thursday on "Morning Joe" on MSNBC. "When I became a police officer, people knocked on my neighbor's doors and interviewed them and asked what type of person am I," Adams, a former police captain, explained.

"And I think those are the same skills that's going to be used to look at not only social media but also knocking our neighbors' doors, speaking to people, finding out who this individual is that we are about to allow to carry a firearm in our city," he continued. The process to obtain a permit to conceal carry has become more stringent.

The background checks will collect information from in-person interviews as well as disclosures from social media accounts for three years prior to the application. They'll also be required to provide the names of any adults living with them, including their spouses, and provide four character witnesses.

Since the ruling that allowed more concealed carry applications starting Sept. 1, the department has seen a 54% increase in applications. Places like Times Square will still be deemed gun-free zones even with the new permits, though Adams will not deploy additional officers to enforce it.

"We're not going to take police officers from those areas where we need police protection because of violence, upticks, but at the same time, it is going to really stretch out our law enforcement capabilities," said Adams. The city has experienced rising crime in recent years.

Americans have the Second Amendment so they can protect themselves. Democrats like Adams prefer to tighten the screws on law-abiding citizens even as criminals increasingly threaten their lives.
