President Joe Biden picked Vice Kamala Harris to be his running mate because she checked the intersectional boxes. However, her conduct on the campaign trail as a fellow presidential candidate cemented her terrible reputation — even among his own family members.
First lady Jill Biden was upset her husband picked Harris to be his running mate in the 2020 presidential election because of disparaging remarks she made him in a debate during the primary, the Daily Wire reported. This insight comes from a new book on the election.
New York Times journalists Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns have penned a 2020 election postmortem titled “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future.” In it, the authors outline the adversarial nature of the relationship between Jill Biden and the then-Senator.
An excerpt from the authors tells of Jill Biden’s reaction to Harris being tapped to join the campaign. “Speaking in confidence with a close adviser to her husband’s campaign, the future first lady posed a pointed question. There are millions of people in the United States, she began. Why, she asked, do we have to choose the one who attacked Joe?”
During one of the Democratic primary debates, Harris called Joe Biden out on his relationships with known segregationists and insinuated he was racist for opposing forced busing. Jill Biden didn’t take kindly to Harris being chosen after that smear attack.
However, Jill Biden’s spokesman, Michael Larosa, has denied this account. “Many books will be written on the 2020 campaign, with countless retellings of events — some accurate, some inaccurate,” he said though he declined further comment.
It wasn’t just Jill Biden who had a problem with Harris. White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield privately aired her misgivings about Harris based on the way she ran her senate and campaign offices. She thought perhaps the repeated problems were about Harris and not simply a staffing issue, though her people deny the communications director ever said this.
Harris is terrible at her job and was an awful pick. It’s not surprising that even Jill Biden could see this and spoke out against her as Joe Biden’s running mate — but we’re all stuck with her now.
