California Gov. Gavin Newsom is being recalled by his own constituents. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi thinks she can stop the will of the people with just her clout.
Pelosi just promised to “defeat” the recall effort despite the ongoing effort to get Newsom out of office, the Daily Caller reported. There are currently 46 candidates vying for the Democratic governor’s job in the Golden State.
“We respect it,” the Speaker said during an event Thursday regarding the Child Tax Credit, according to Fox News. “But we do not like it, and we will defeat it,” she promised of the recall effort.
California voters will be asked both whether they’re in favor of the recall and if so, who they wish to choose as the next governor. Newsom has urged his constituents to simply select “no” and leave the other question blank.
Pelosi urged “everybody to get out the vote” while praising Newsom’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and how he “alleviated” the suffering of Californians. “I have my own operation working to get out the vote [and] making calls to defeat the recall of our governor.” President Joe Biden has also publicly shown his support for Newsom.
Grateful for your support, Mr. President.
There’s simply too much at stake — vote NO on September 14th to reject this Republican led recall. https://t.co/urv32Q0jvn

Despite backing from Pelosi and Biden, 51% of Californians support recalling Newsom as of August, The Hill reported. This is up from the spring when only 36% were in favor of the effort and doesn’t bode well for the referendum coming Sept. 14.
Even with the state solidly Democratic, things are looking bleak for Newsom. Republicans may not pull off a win for their party if they succeed in ousting Newsome, but the recall effort still has heavy GOP support.
Newsom has been a disaster for his state, even more so than the usual mess that Democrats typically turn out to be. He’s in serious trouble, and there isn’t much Pelosi can do to stop the momentum.
