Nancy Pelosi ridiculed over absence of diversity in press corps photo

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) career at the helm of the lower chamber draws toward its close, a controversy over a photo in which she appeared last week is making for an embarrassing ending in that it depicts just the sort of racial homogeneity for which she and fellow Democrats routinely take others to task.

The firestorm erupted when Farnoush Amiri, a congressional reporter with the Associated Press, took to Twitter and posted a group shot of Pelosi with numerous members of what she described as "the women of the Capitol Press corps."

Alongside Pelosi were roughly 25 smiling women, almost all of whom were white and utterly lacking in the sort of visible racial and ethnic diversity Democrats typically tout as critical to just about every endeavor under the sun.

It was not long before numerous denizens of the Twitterverse noted the laughable symbolism of the situation and commented accordingly online.

Social media poster @_ThisJustin_ aptly and sarcastically observed, "No black people? That's some seriously serious racism."

Another online observer astutely wrote, "What's the racial breakdown of this pic? Proportional to the population? Asking for those of us who follow the race-baiting standards set by the media... ."

A poster who goes by the Twitter handle @richardrahl1086 facetiously expressed concern over what he jokingly characterized as "a distinct overrepresentation of oppressive white women."

While it may be a stretch to use Pelosi's appearance amid a gaggle of predominately white, female journalists as a means to allege a wider hypocrisy when it comes to promoting diversity in the ranks of the D.C. media establishment, recent events in the Biden White House press room have, in fact, raised eyebrows about possible discrimination.

Just last week, Cameroonian journalist Simon Ateba stepped forward to accuse White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre of "discriminating" against him during briefings in which she has frequently declined to call on him or, alternatively, has ignored questions he has posed, as Newsweek reports.

Ateba, who had also engaged in conflict with Jean-Pierre's predecessor, Jen Psaki, outlined his concerns during an appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight, saying, "It's been a disaster, a total catastrophe, a real nightmare covering the Biden White House."

"Right now, I'm the voice of Africa in the U.S. – but I can confirm that the level of discrimination against me and against African journalists in the White House is astounding, it's disgraceful," Ateba added.

Taking aim directly at Jean-Pierre, Ateba continued, "I sound different. I wasn't born here. I was born in Cameroon. I speak French. I speak different languages. I don't have an American accent. I've tried. I've failed and I've decided I'll stick with my accent. I'm an immigrant, and she doesn't like that."

Whether in a posed photo with liberal-friendly members of the Washington press corps or in daily dealings with a journalist who actually does embody the sort of diversity progressives instruct all Americans to doggedly pursue, it appears that the left's "do as I say, not as I do" mentality is on full display yet again.
