Democrats know they’re in trouble for the 2024 midterm elections. However, they’re trying to parlay the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade into a fresh pitch to voters.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is leading the appeal to give the party two more senators so Congress can secure abortion rights, Slate reported. The plan is to elect more Democrats while also eliminating the filibuster.
The current Senate is split 50-50 with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. However, Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) have been defecting from the party on many issues leading to this appeal after Roe was overturned.
“It is essential that we protect and expand our pro-choice majorities in the House and Senate in November so that we can eliminate the filibuster so that we can restore women’s fundamental rights—and freedom for every American,” Pelosi claimed. These were apparently the new marching orders for the party.
“Give us two more Senate seats and we will make abortion legal nationwide as a matter of federal statutory law,” tweeted Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) Monday. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) who also chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, called for “two more Democratic pro-choice senators.”
Others were more specific in which states to target. “John Fetterman, I’m looking at you in Pennsylvania. Mandela Barnes, I’m looking at you in Wisconsin,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said Sunday.
“We bring them in, then we’ve got the votes, and we can protect every woman no matter where she lives,” Warren said. Unfortunately for Democrats, their challenges don’t end in the Senate.
In order to pass such controversial legislation, Democrats would have to keep control of the House of Representatives. They are already on shaky ground heading into November, and it’s doubtful they’ll prevail even with the abortion issue back on the table.
These politicians are shockingly eager to spill the blood of the unborn. They see their only hope for re-election is to rally Americans just as interested in keeping such barbarism legal.
