Despite rumors to the contrary, Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just dismissed the idea that she disrespects progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) in an interview with Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes on Sunday.
Stahl questioned Pelosi about Cortez’s complaints that House leadership fails to groom younger up-and-coming House members for leadership positions. Stahl asked, “Why does AOC complain that you have not been grooming younger people for leadership?”
Pelosi, with a pinched and unsmiling face, unwillingly and dismissively shot back, “I don’t know. You’ll have to ask her … because we are.”
When Stahl pointed out that Pelosi’s answer was sharp and dismissive, Pelosi denied it. She said, “I’m not dismissing her. I respect her.
The tension between Pelosi and AOC and “the squad” has been apparent since they were seated in 2019. Pelosi has tried to keep the progressive squad in check as she tries to keep the less radical side of the party happy.
Pelosi seemed to be annoyed at the amount of attention AOC gets as she explained to Stahl that AOC is effective, but other Democrats are also worthy of notice. Pelosi said, ” I think she’s very effective, as are … many other members of our caucus that the press doesn’t pay attention to. But they are there, and they are building support for what comes next (impeachment).”
AOC, unhappy with the current leadership of the Democrat party, told The Intercept in December: “We need new leadership in the Democratic Party.” Rumors — and some evidence — of infighting between House Democrats and the Progressive Caucus have been building since AOC’s election in 2018, and only continue to grow.
Despite her denials, it is obvious that Pelosi is annoyed with AOC and her distruptive colleagues in the clip below. Watch:
