Mitch McConnell hospitalized with concussion after trip and fall incident

In shocking news out of Washington, D.C., Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was rushed to an area hospital and is reportedly being treated for a concussion after a mishap at a hotel on Wednesday night, as NBC News reports.

The incident involving McConnell reportedly occurred at the Waldorf Astoria hotel after a dinner event hosted by the Senate Leadership Fund, when the Kentucky Republican tripped and fell with sufficient force to cause a concussion.

According to a statement from the Washington Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department issued early on Thursday, an “adult male” was said to have been taken from the Waldorf Astoria at 9:17 p.m. the prior evening, and “notes did not indicate patient condition.”

Though news had trickled out that McConnell was the person who had been taken to the hospital, it took some time for additional details about the senator's status to emerge.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took to the floor Thursday morning to send his good wishes for his colleague's speedy recovery and to “offer a prayer of strength and healing for the leader and his family,” but he did not offer any insight into McConnell's condition.

Adding to the mystery that surrounding the situation at the time, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said when asked if he knew the minority leader's status, “No, we haven't heard anything. Nobody's passed anything down the line to any of us. We haven't heard.”

According to the Associated Press, however, it was eventually announced that McConnell had been diagnosed as having suffered a concussion in the fall and would be remaining in the hospital for a period of time his spokesperson, David Popp, described as “a few days.”

Popp added that the Senate leader “is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes,” but provided no updated information on McConnell's progress.

At McConnell's current age of 81, any serious fall can be cause for real concern, and this accident is particularly worrisome given the fact that he is said to have sustained a concussion as a result of the event.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, a concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury with the potential to impact brain function, and though the effects are typically temporary in nature, they can include vertigo, concentration issues, memory loss, headaches, and more.

Treatment for concussions often includes hospitalization for additional monitoring to ensure that existing symptoms do not get worse and to watch for potential complications, which – as far as the public has been informed – is the purpose of McConnell's stay.

As McConnell's spokesperson acknowledged, his boss had been inundated from prayers and good wishes from both sides of the aisle in the wake of his accident, but to the surprise of many, he also received words of support from a onetime political ally-turned-foe, former President Donald Trump.

Despite having previously referred to McConnell as a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” who “doesn't have what it takes to lead” the Republican Party, Trump took the high road when asked about the lawmaker's injury.

Speaking to a group of reporters Thursday, Trump said, according to the Daily Mail, I disagree with almost everything he does, but I certainly would like him to get well. I want him to be well. I want him to be well. And then get back and be strong.”
