Former first lady Michelle Obama got candid about the struggles she and husband Barack Obama experienced in their marriage in a recent episode of her podcast, revealing that at times, she wanted to “push Barack out of the window.”
Obama opened up about her marriage in an episode of The Michelle Obama Podcast with late-night TV host Conan O’Brien, in which she reflected on her nearly 28 years of marriage to former president Barack Obama.
She told O’Brien that “There were times that I wanted to push Barack out of the window. And I say that because it’s like, you’ve got to know the feelings will be intense. But that doesn’t mean you quit. And these periods can last a long time. They can last years.”
Obama offered advice on romantic relationships to her listeners, using examples from her lengthy marriage to the former president.
Obama explained that some young couples are “ready to give up because they think they’re broken” when faced with challenges, but explained that challenges and harships within a marriage make the relationship stronger.
“I just want to say, look, if that breaks a marriage, then Barack and I have been broken off and on, throughout our marriage, but we have a very strong marriage,” she said. “And if I had given up on it, if I had walked away from it, in those tough times, then I would’ve missed all the beauty that was there as well.”
Barack and Michelle Obama celebrate their 28th wedding anniversary in October, and the couple remain a favorite among Democrat voters for their apparently idyllic relationship.
