McConnell agrees to vote with Democrats on gun control

Republicans have not learned their lesson. After years of disappointing their voters by siding with Democrats to their detriment, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is doubling down on the losing strategy.

McConnell has reportedly agreed to vote with Democrats for sweeping gun control legislation, Breitbart reported. Previously, the Kentucky Republican had tapped Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to craft a bipartisan version of the legislation.

“Sen Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announces he will support bi-partisan framework on new gun control and school safety legislation,” MacFarlane tweeted on June 14. Just two days before, it was announced that the Senate had come to a bipartisan agreement.

Some of the new requirements would include nebulous language about an “investigative period” for those under 21 who purchase weapons, though the duration of that period is not spelled out. It also would impose red flag laws and ban straw purchases.

This push for legislation comes on the heels of massacres involving guns, according to Fox News. Last month, a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, took the lives of 19 children and two adults.

Another massacre in a Buffalo supermarket killed ten people who were targeted because of their race. Last week, a man opened fire at a factory breakroom in Smithsburg, Maryland. All of these shootings were tragedies involving firearms and significant loss of life.

However, there’s no indication stricter gun laws would have prevented those already illegal acts. Still, McConnell expressed his eagerness to vote with Democrats on new legislation. “Myself, I’m comfortable with the framework, and if the legislation ends up reflecting what the framework indicates, I’ll be supportive of it,” McConnell said.

Republicans repeatedly make the mistake of falling for Democrats’ traps every time some tragedy spurs lawmakers on who want to just “do something.” This time, McConnell seems eager to restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, knowing that his constituents do not agree — and the GOP voters won’t forget.
