Massachusetts Trump-backed challenger wins primary for governor

Trump-backed Republican candidate Geoff Diehl won the Massachusetts primary and will face Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey in November to become the state's new governor.

Both candidates are fighting to replace the open spot in a tight battle in the state.

"If Healey wins in November's general election she'd be both the first openly gay person and first woman to serve as the state's governor," Axios reported.

"Democrats are hoping to flip the GOP-held seat as 10% of the electorate is registered Republican, compared to roughly 31% for Democrats and some 57% for independents, per AP," it added.

The spot became open after current GOP Gov. Charlie Baker chose not to run for reelection. The fierce battle could lead to either a liberal leftist running the state or a Trump-endorsed leader focused on conservative values and an American first agenda.

With the majority of the state registered as independents, those without a major party affiliation will decide the outcome, perhaps indicating which way the nation will decide in electing a president in 2024.
