Mary Trump's effort to sabotage Trump's Texas rally backfires

Mary Trump, the niece of former President Donald Trump who has vocally opposed his reelection effort, sought to sabotage his first major rally of the year.

The effort failed in epic fashion, however, as the event was attended by thousands in Waco, Texas.

The attempt

"Donald has a rally in Waco this Saturday. It's a ploy to remind his cult of the infamous Waco siege of 1993, where an anti-government cult battled the FBI. Scores of people died. He wants the same violent chaos to rescue him from justice," Mary Trump wrote.

"But we can stop him. If we book the 50,000+ venue, we can make sure most of the seats are empty when the traitor takes the stage," she continued.

"We can no longer fail to hold powerful men accountable for their crimes against our country," she added.

The event

“A makeshift parking site manifested itself well away from the staging area at Waco Regional Airport,” the Tribune-Herald reported.

“Hundreds of vehicles broke ranks with the bumper-to-bumper traffic leading directly to the venue, where designated parking areas had been marked off, and created an ad hoc parking lot of their own near China Spring Road and Uncle Worm’s Texas Cuisine restaurant.”

A crowd estimated at about 15,000 arrived for the former president's event, with his niece's call for protest ending without an impact.

The rally, Trump's first in his comeback presidential bid, showed that he still has a large following among many across the nation.

The successful kickoff may signal that Trump has enough supporters to win the GOP nomination again but questions remain over whether he can change the end results in a rematch against President Joe Biden.

The key will be determined by a handful of battleground states where Republicans face close matchups, including Georgia and Arizona, where recent elections showed one state voting for a Republican governor and another choosing a Democrat.
