In the wake of reporting that the Biden administration provided the Taliban with a list of names of Afghan allies and American citizens still needing to reach the airport in Kabul, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) demanded answers from the White House and pledged to block the president’s national security nominees until he gets them, according to Breitbart.
As Fox News reported over the weekend, the network had confirmed a report from Politico suggesting that American officials in Afghanistan sent the Taliban a list of Afghan allies, green card holders, and American citizens requiring unfettered passage to the airport for purposes of evacuation.
A source reportedly told Fox News that while the information given to the Taliban was not comprehensive in terms of including “every single person in the country,” names of groups of people were shared in a more piecemeal manner.
That same source indicated that the fact that the names were given over to the Taliban “essentially doomed” other individuals who did have clearance to go to the airport, but who were omitted from the lists for one reason or another and also put at serious risk Afghans who had provided material assistance to American forces over the past several years, whom the Taliban has been known to directly target for retaliation.
During remarks to the press made last Thursday, Biden himself declined to deny the reporting regarding the lists of names, and said that “there may have been” such information turned over to the Taliban, something that State Department Ned Price, however, later seemed to contradict.
In response to the conflicting accounts, Rubio wrote a letter to Biden, saying, “I am greatly distressed by your admission that your administration may have provided a list of American citizens, legal permanent residents and vulnerable Afghans to the Taliban.”
The senator went on to declare the very notion that the administration would provide such information to the Taliban as irresponsible and naive,” no matter what sorts of “assurances” given by the group, adding, “This action has endangered Americans, and our allies, who have been unable to leave Afghanistan and seriously calls into question your administration’s decision making.”
Rubio was not the only lawmaker outraged by the Politico report and the implications for Americans and allies, with Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) deeming the very idea of such conduct “absolutely reckless and horrific.”
Blackburn went on to encapsulate the sentiments of a growing number of Americans who are now insisting on real accountability for the administration’s shameful – and indeed deadly – mismanagement of the U.S. troop withdrawal, stating unequivocally that “every single person involved must resign or be impeached.”
