Man pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter of rapper Pop Smoke

CBS News reports that one of the four men implicated in the death of rapper Pop Smoke has just pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

The man who entered the guilty plea is not being identified by name because he was a minor when the killing occurred. Today, the individual is reportedly 20 years old, but, at the time of the killing, he was 17.

Pop Smoke's death occurred on Feb. 19, 2020, when the rapper - whose legal name is Bashar Barakah Jackson - was 20 years old.

Jackson lived in New York. But, on that particular day, he was in Los Angeles, California, on a brief four-day trip.

A day before the killing, Jackson inadvertently revealed the address of the Hollywood Hills house where he was staying by taking a picture of himself with a gift bag that had the address on the label and by posting this picture to social media.

A group of individuals, the following day, showed up at the residence and robbed Jackson. He is said to have been taking a shower when he was confronted by the masked intruders.

A violent confrontation ensued. That confrontation ended when one of the intruders struck Jackson with a pistol and then shot him three times in the back. This would prove to be fatal.

In addition to killing Jackson, the intruders also stole a Rolex watch, which they would later sell for $2,000.

An investigation of the matter ensued, and authorities discovered that four individuals were involved in the incident. Two of them have been identified and two of them have not. Reports indicate that there was a fifth individual involved, but that this individual did not enter the residence.

The two that have been identified are Corey Walker and Keandre Rodgers, who were, respectively, 19 and 18 years old at the time of the incident. The alleged shooter is said to have been 15 years old, and, then, there is the individual who just pled guilty, who was 17 years old.

The man pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Additionally, reports indicate that, in an Inglewood juvenile court, this individual also pled guilty to home invasion robbery.

For these crimes, the unidentified man has been sentenced to four years and two months imprisonment in a juvenile facility. It is unclear what, if anything, the government got in exchange for the guilty plea.

The remaining three individuals - Walker, Rodgers, and the unidentified alleged shooter - still face the charge of murder during the commission of a robbery and burglary.
