On the heels of what appears to be a win for Democrats in the special Senate runoff election in Georgia, Democrats are wasting zero time in preparing what the future of Washington D.C. will look like.
According to Fox News, there’s already intense pressure reportedly being leveled against liberal U.S Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire so that incoming President-elect Joe Biden can replace him with a younger replacement, preferably a woman of color.
The pressure is reportedly coming from a group known as “Demand Justice,” who are literally demanding that a Black woman be named as Breyer’s replacement, according to Demand Justice executive director Brian Fallon.
Fallon told Politico:
Justice Breyer’s service on the court has been remarkable, and history will remember him even more fondly if he ends up playing a critical role in ensuring the appointment of the first Black woman to the court. Timing his retirement in the coming year would guarantee that opportunity, and it would be wise to do so because the window may prove a narrow one.
Adding a bit of political street credit to the demands, former state Rep. Bakari Sellers said on Tuesday that if Democrats manage to win the Senate, and it appears that they have, that Breyer should immediately resign when Biden is handed the keys to the White House.
“If we get to 50, I need Justice Breyer to announce retirement at 12:01pm on January 20th,” Sellers tweeted. “And I need us to nominate and elect some federal judges.”
Breyer, on the other hand, hasn’t indicated that he would bow to such pressures, at least as of now. He recently said that he would retire at some point instead of remaining on the High Court until his death, but wasn’t sure when that day would come.
However, Democrats are desperate to avoid a repeat of the situation created by the late SCOTUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death. Ginsburg refused to bow to pressure to retire during Barack Obama’s presidency, and her death in 2020 allowed President Trump to appoint a conservative justice to the court — any Democrat’s worst nightmare.
In preparation for a potential vacancy, Joe Biden has reportedly already assembled a list of potential Supreme Court Justice nominees, with many of them being people and women of color.
“I have — we are putting together a list of a group of African-American women who are qualified and have the experience to be in the court. I am not going to release that until we go further down the line, and vetting them as well,” Biden said, according to Fox News.
