The media was more concerned with denigrating former President Donald Trump than they ever were with covering the actual news. That was just a theory on the right until new information emerged proving they were doing just that.
The left was incensed at accusations that the COVID-19 virus may have escaped from a virus lab in Wuhan, China, when the pandemic began, the Daily Caller reported. Now the “follow the science” media have finally admitted they didn’t explore the very plausible theory because of their blind hatred for Trump.
Early in the pandemic, many publicly speculated about the possibility that the virus emerged from a Wuhan laboratory that was studying coronaviruses. Once Trump took up that cause, it became taboo to imply that it had anything to do with the outbreak.
In February 2020, Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton was smeared by the New York Times for even questioning whether the virus may have escaped from a lab. “The conspiracy theory lacks evidence and has been dismissed by scientists,” the outlet’s report on the issue stated.
This was from the liberals, those on the side of the aisle and culture that was supposed to be “following the science.” As it turns out, they were following where the political winds were blowing.
“It got jumbled up together with some of the more crazy aspects of Trump, and scientists recoiled against that and went in favor of the theory that COVID-19 had emerged out of a natural process versus a lab escape,” J. Stephen Morrison, Center for Strategic and International Studies recently admitted NPR.
“I think it is important to remember that part of the issue is when this was first being reported on and discussed back a few months after the pandemic had begun, was that then President Trump and Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State, suggested they’ve seen evidence that this was formed in a lab and they also suggested that it was not released on purpose,” Maggie Haberman, a reporter for the New York Times, now claims. “But they refused to release the evidence showing what it was and so because of that made this instantly political.”
Now that Trump is out of office, it’s apparently safe for reputations everywhere to dig into the matter. If they left had truly been following the science, they could have caught the trail of breadcrumbs that led right back to that laboratory. It’s still not a proven fact that it was man-made or even originated there, but it’s worth investigating — and that curiosity is the true spirit of science.
