Liberal media tries to spin Trump speech, gets destroyed by Ted Cruz

After Donald Trump delivered his historic address at Mount Rushmore on Friday, liberal media outlets scrambled to spin the speech to smear Trump.

The New York Times was one of the most egregious offenders, characterizing the speech as “dark and divisive” in the coverage of the event. The Times caught immediate flak for the editorializing, with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) calling out the “deranged leftists” at the paper.

Trump’s speech implored the nation to unite around the shared values of patriotism, rule of law, and respect for American history and heroes, but leftists could not allow any positive coverage of the address.

The Times White House Correspondent Annie Karni, wrote:

Standing in a packed amphitheater in front of Mount Rushmore for an Independence Day celebration, President Trump delivered a dark and divisive speech on Friday that cast his struggling effort to win a second term as a battle against a ‘new far-left fascism’ seeking to wipe out the nation’s values and history.

Cruz — along with many others — ripped the paper for its partisan coverage. “Donald Trump gave a majestic speech before Mt. Rushmore, celebrating America & recounting the magnificent champions for Liberty Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln & Teddy Roosevelt,” Cruz said on Saturday.

“Only in the mind of deranged Leftists is defending Mt. Rushmore, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, & Teddy Roosevelt ‘leaning in to the culture wars.’ The culture warriors are the mobs burning our cities, defacing American heroes,” Cruz continued.

Other liberal newspapers attempted to follow the Times’ lead, with the Los Angeles Times accusing Trump of using the Fourth of July to “stoke a culture war.”

ABC tweeted that Trump’s speech “pushes racial division, flouts virus rules at the foot of Mount Rushmore,” completely ignoring the fact that Trump explicitly condemned racial division.

Trump encouraged viewers to “embrace tolerance, not prejudice” and that “we believe in equal opportunity, equal justice, and equal treatment for citizens of every race, background, religion, and creed. Every child of every color — born and unborn — is made in the holy image of God.”

As Cruz put it, “we are living in parallel universes.”
