In a shocking turn of events in Loudon County, Virginia, liberal Commonwealth Attorney Buta Biberaj appeared in court to press for the jailing of a local father who made headlines earlier this year for protesting a school board cover-up of the sexual assault of his daughter, despite the fact that she campaigned for office on an anti-mass incarceration platform, as the Daily Caller reports.
According to the outlet, Biberaj personally turned up in court to pursue the prosecution of Scott Smith and to seek a term of incarceration on two misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct that followed his appearance at a rowdy school board meeting during which he was taken into police custody for protesting the public body’s handling of his daughter’s case.
The decision by Biberaj to request a period of incarceration in the matter came as a shock to Smith’s attorney Elizabeth Lancaster who declared, “The idea that that they would actually be seeking jail time, I’d guess in my 15 years the number of times I’ve seen that happen would be zero.”
Lancaster continued, “The idea that this is a person who we need to put in a cage was astounding to me given the social justice reform she was pushing. I was blown away,” referencing the jail reform initiatives on which Biberaj ran for the office she currently holds.
As the New York Post reported, back in 2019, Biberaj explained to the Washington Post, “I want to make sure we are working with our school system and law enforcement to make sure we are decreasing the number of kids who are referred to our court system,” in an apparent attempt to burnish her anti-incarceration bona fides.
The Virginia Star also reported that out of the 735 domestic violence cases sent to her for potential prosecution, the office under Biberaj’s purview dismissed 491 of them, only adding to her reputation as someone unwilling to press for serious penalties even in heinous instances of criminality.
However, when it came to Smith, a man who was arrested simply for speaking out about his local superintendent’s role in covering up the sexual assault of his daughter in a school bathroom by a “gender fluid” student who was ultimately found guilty of that offense by a judge, Biberaj was out for blood.
Given Biberaj’s known ties to far-left groups and her acceptance of substantial campaign cash from a George Soros-backed PAC, as the Daily Caller noted, it should perhaps come as little surprise that she came down so hard on a parent who dared push back on school district policies and conduct that allowed a sexual predator access to his child.
In the end, Smith received a suspended sentence of 10 days in jail, made contingent on one year of good behavior, but the very fact that this radical, left-wing prosecutor believes that the true threat to society is a parent at a school board meeting, rather than the type of violent offender she reportedly lets skate with regularity, is something that should give everyone pause.
