Leftist group: Sen. Dick Durbin’s Catholic faith creates ‘conflict of interest’ with his duty to ‘clean up SCOTUS’

Normally a strong ally to those on the far left, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin (D) is likely stinging from the shock of a recent admonition from pro-abortion group Ruth Sent Us in which the group also seemed to threaten protests outside his home unless he puts aside his current priorities and takes steps to “clean up SCOTUS first,” as Fox News reports.

According to the advocacy group, Durbin, who serves as the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has a responsibility to hold conservative Supreme Court justices accountable – for what, exactly, is unclear – the lawmaker’s own Catholic faith is a “conflict of interest” when it comes to fulfilling that duty.

The comments from Ruth Sent Us came on the heels of a Friday Judiciary Committee announcement that Durbin was “pressing the CEOs of Discord and Twitch” over the role those social media platforms supposedly play “in disseminating hatred and extremist content” and what they plan to do in response.

Reacting to the panel’s current focus on that issue – perhaps to the exclusion of its members’ preferred topic of abortion and the possible reversal of Roe v. Wade, the group implored Durbin to “[a]nnounce televised hearings into the traitors and sexual assaulters on the Court,” singling out Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh.

On Sunday, the group appeared to double down on its criticism of Durbin’s allegiance to Catholicism, writing on Twitter, “Durbin, there is a conflict of interest between your Catholic faith and your role as Chair of [the Senate Judiciary Committee], with sole discretion to hold hearings into corrupt Catholic justices. We demand answers.”

That was not all, in that the organization also declared, “We’re going to start protests at your homes to make sure you hear our message,” an apparent reference not just to Durbin, but also to his fellow Catholic lawmaker Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), from whom they also demanded action regarding the Supreme Court.

Ruth Sent Us is the same group that has organized “walk-by” protests at the homes of several justices on the conservative wing of the high court following the leak of a draft majority Supreme Court opinion that suggested an imminent reversal of the decades-old abortion precedent venerated by the left.

Earlier this month, in announcing the planned demonstrations, the group declared war on the “extremist Supreme Court” it said “routinely issues rulings that hurt women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights” and published maps detailing the residential neighborhoods in which several justices live.

Durbin is not the only Democrat legislator in recent days to run into difficulties reconciling his pro-choice stance with this religious faith, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was banned last week by the archbishop of San Diego from receiving Holy Communion due to her longtime position in support of abortion.
