Lance Reddick's death caused by heart disease, death records show

Film and television legend Lance Reddick, known for his roles in the "John Wick" movies and the HBO series "The Wire," died in March at the age of 60.

According to records obtained by TMZ, his official cause of death has been listed as heart disease.

Specifically, Reddick reportedly suffered from both ischemic heart disease as well as atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, both of which can be fatal.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD), also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), is a medical condition that occurs when the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, become narrowed or blocked. This leads to a reduced blood flow to the heart, resulting in chest pain or discomfort, known as angina, or even a heart attack.

The most common cause of IHD is atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up inside the arteries, reducing their capacity to supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart. IHD is a leading cause of death worldwide.

Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) is a type of ischemic heart disease that occurs when the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, become narrowed due to the buildup of plaque inside the arterial walls. Plaque is made up of cholesterol, fat, calcium, and other substances that accumulate over time, causing the arteries to narrow and harden.

This process, known as atherosclerosis, reduces blood flow to the heart, leading to chest pain, shortness of breath, and, in severe cases, heart attacks.

Some of that data may indicate why Reddick's family has already called into question the coroner's determination.

James E. Hornstein, an attorney for Reddick's family released a statement saying the information on the death certificate was "inconsistent with the facts known to the family," the New York Daily News reported.

The New York Daily News noted:

Hornstein added that “no autopsy was performed” on the “John Wick” actor and that, as far Hornstein knows, “no medical examination of Lance during his lifetime ever indicated such conditions.”

"On behalf of [his wife] Stephanie Reddick, the death certificate information is not corroborated and is inconsistent with the facts known to the family," Hornstein added.

The dispute leaves a giant question mark as to how the beloved family man and actor passed away.

"We are deeply saddened and heartbroken at the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Lance Reddick,” Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. "He was the consummate professional and a joy to work with. Our love and prayers are with his wife Stephanie, his children, family and friends. … We will miss him dearly."
