Los Angeles City Council Democratic President Nury Martinez resigned on Monday after the release of leaked audio of her and another council member sharing racist comments.
Martinez's resignation came just one day after the Los Angeles Times leaked the audio of a conversation from last year.

"They're raising him like a little white kid," Martinez said. "I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner, and then I'll bring him back."
Martinez also described Councilman Mike Bonin's son as a "parece changuito," Spanish for "that little monkey."

The racist comments by Democrats revealed a strong contrast with the party's calls for increased diversity and against racism.
The changes also open sudden new doors for the city's liberal council, that will lead to controversy over who will serve as the group's new president.
