Biden administration climate czar John Kerry said during an interview with French TV network BFM on Monday that President Joe Biden had “not been aware” of the submarine deal between the U.S. and Australia.
“He literally had not been aware of what had transpired,” Kerry said, according to Breitbart News.
“And I don’t want to go into the details of it, but suffice it to say that the president — my president, is very committed to strengthening the relationship and making sure that this is a small event of the past and moving on to the much more important future,” he added.
The matter involved the U.S. selling submarines to Australia, though France already had a $40 billion plan in place with Australia. Some expressed concern the president was so unaware of the situation.
France recalled its ambassadors to both the U.S. and Australia over the matter. The crisis was in addition the Biden administration’s failure with departing Afghanistan during the same time period.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also in France this week and met with French President Macron to rebuild relations after the blunder.
The problem was a serious one, but an issue the two nations seek to resolve to remain allies in the days ahead.
