Kari Lake's election lawsuit has been rejected by Arizona judge

A judge in Arizona dismissed a lawsuit filed by Republican Kari Lake, who was backed by former President Donald Trump, in an effort to reverse her loss in the election for state governor.

According to a report by The Daily Wire, Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson concluded on Saturday that the lawsuit's two remaining allegations lacked "clear and compelling" evidence of deliberate wrongdoing in Maricopa County that could have changed the outcome during a trial last week in Phoenix.

The Democratic candidate, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, is about to take the oath of office as governor. Lake has sworn to file an appeal.

After the results revealed that Hobbs had defeated Lake by about 17,000 votes in the November election, Lake, a former journalist who made preserving the integrity of the voting process a primary priority during her campaign, sued Hobbs and Maricopa County.

The most populous county in Arizona and home to the capital city of Phoenix, Maricopa County, experienced difficulties on November 8 with the tabulation machine and printer.

In her lawsuit, Lake said that election officials conspired to deny voters their right to vote and that "hundreds of thousands of illegal ballots infected the Maricopa County election."

Thompson rejected eight of the lawsuit's ten allegations last week. He permitted two claims to go through that involved accusations of willful misconduct associated with broken ballot printers and a disregard for ballot chain-of-custody rules.

State attorneys said there was no merit to the case during the subsequent trial. In his 10-page decision, the court agreed, finding that Lake and the witnesses she invited to testify had not presented a strong enough argument despite being given access to a restricted number of ballots.

The court “acknowledges the anger and frustration of voters who were subjected to inconvenience and confusion at voter centers as technical problems arose during the 2022 General Election,” Thompson said.

“But this Court’s duty is not solely to incline an ear to public outcry,” the judge added. “It is to subject plaintiff’s claims and defendants’ actions to the light of the courtroom and scrutiny of the law.”

Abe Hamadeh and Mark Finchem, two additional Republicans who ran for secretary of state and attorney general, respectively, also obtained adverse decisions in their legal actions attempting to overturn their defeats. Lake is using the appeals process, much like Finchem.

“My Election Case provided the world with evidence that proves our elections are run outside of the law. This Judge did not rule in our favor. However, for the sake of restoring faith and honesty in our elections, I will appeal his ruling,” Lake said in a tweet Saturday.

Hobbs rejoiced in his firing. The "voters of Arizona — not the conspiracy-riddled, dark corners of the Internet — are the ones who chose our leaders," according to a statement from her campaign manager Nicole DeMont.

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates called the ruling “a win for Arizona voters and American democracy.”
