Democrats and Republicans have joined a bipartisan effort to encourage Vice President Kamala Harris to visit the United States-Mexico border to assess the migrant crisis in person, according to Breitbart News.
Harris, however, has no plans to visit the border at this time, as a White House official confirmed to The Los Angeles Times.
The sources, who wished to remain anonymous, told the paper that the vice president only wishes to address what she calls the “root causes” of migration and doesn’t believe a border trip will assist her in that effort.
Harris was given complete control over border security by the White Hosue weeks ago and has since been under intense scrutiny to deal with the massive influx of migrants crossing the border between the United States and Mexico, many of whom are successful.
The vice president has made it clear that she plans to address the aforementioned “root causes” by fixing the problems in the migrants home countries, primarily Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
That massive undertaking is a task that some consider to be too big of a challenge to complete before the migrant crisis, already at a fever pitch, becomes catastrophic for the United States
The Times acknowledged how rare it was to see the bipartisan effort to push Harris to the south to see the problem firsthand, saying that “Democrats, nonpartisan policy experts and pro-immigrant advocacy groups also say Harris should visit the border, as a high-level sign of the administration’s commitment to fixing the battered immigration system and so that Harris can witness the scope of the problem she has been asked to help fix.”
“She’s playing it, in my opinion, very safe by not dealing with the border,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), whose district includes 194 miles of U.S.-Mexico border, according to Breitbart.
“We want this issue to be managed quickly and in a better way,” he added. “I’d rather be talking about [money] that [is] going to small businesses or stimulus checks.”
