Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once called the “Freedom Convoy” movement a “fringe minority.” Now he’s made a move that proves just how frightened he is of its power.
Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act Monday, giving the government the power to restrict travel and ban public assemblies, the Washington Examiner reported. This is the first time it’s been used and will give Trudeau 30 days to shut down the protests in the nation’s capital.
“This was the necessary and responsible thing to do,” Trudeau said when he made the announcement. He promised it “will be time-limited, geographically targeted, as well as reasonable and proportionate to the threats they are meant to address.”
The Canadian Parliament must vote on the measure within seven days of the pronouncement and has the right to revoke it. However, the Emergencies Act went into effect at the prime minister’s pronouncement.
This move was aimed at breaking up the trucker convoy that began on Jan. 28. Numerous truckers showed up in Ottawa to protest the requirement for drivers to vaccinate or test for COVID-19 in order to be permitted to make runs across the border, Reuters reported.
At first, Trudeau tried to dismiss the protest as a “fringe minority” until the situation came to a head last week when truckers blockaded a vital border crossing point between Canada and the U.S. It was cleared Sunday but sent a message to Trudeau and the Canadian government.
Since the protest began, several provinces in Canada have dropped COVID-19 restrictions, including Alberta, which will lift its mask mandate for school children. Ontario has also agreed to nix its capacity on indoor gatherings effective later this week.
Rather than becoming a show of his power, this authoritarian crackdown has revealed the cowardly tyrant Trudeau is at his core. Now the prime minister’s bold, wholesale embrace of fascism proves he’s running scared.
