Justice Sotomayor took $3M from major publisher, refused to recuse herself from cases involving it

It's almost comical that liberal groups and politicians are pressing so hard to target conservative Supreme Court Justices when in reality, they need to take a closer look at one of their own.

According to The Daily Wire, liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor refused to recuse herself from a number of copyright-related cases brought against Penguin Random House.

That would be the same Penguin Random House that has paid her over $3 million for her previous book titles.

The outlet noted:

In 2010, she got a $1.2 million book advance from Knopf Doubleday Group, a part of the conglomerate. In 2012, she reported receiving two advance payments from the publisher totaling $1.9 million.

Sotomayor also received payments directly from the major publisher in 2017, payments that were steady until 2021.

Financial disclosures obtained by The Daily Wire said those payments totaled around $500,000.

Charlie Kirk explained the controversy via Twitter.

"So Liberal SCOTUS Justice Sotomayor took over $3 million from Penguin Random House and didn’t recuse herself from multiple copyright cases involving the publisher—with rulings that sided in favor for Random House and saved them mountains of $$—even though Justice Breyer did recuse himself while getting paid far less by the same publisher," he wrote.

Kirk added: "Given the breathless coverage over contrived controversies involving Justices Thomas and Gorsuch, it’s great to see solid conservative reporting punching back and giving the left a taste of its own medicine."

Notably, in October 2019, Sotomayor received a $10,586 check from the publisher on the same day that a children's book author petitioned the high court to file suit against the publisher, claiming they copied one of her books.

You guessed it -- months later, the high court decided not to hear the case. A few months later, she received her biggest check ever from Penguin Random House, totaling a whopping $82,807.

Given the way that the high court voted to not hear the case, there's no public record of how Sotomayor voted, but it's not much of a conspiracy theory to take a wild guess.

However, the court does note when a justice recuses him or herself, and Sotomayor was not on the list. Surprise, surprise.

The Daily Wire added:

The findings come amidst a seemingly coordinated push in the media accusing a slew of conservative justices of misconduct related to their financial disclosures, such as Justice Clarence Thomas taking trips financed by a wealthy conservative friend. Fix The Court, a nonpartisan group that has long watchdogged Supreme Court finances and which compiled some of the financial disclosures used in The Daily Wire’s analysis, pointed out that Sotomayor failed to disclose six trips in 2016 funded by outside groups, before later correcting her disclosures.
