Jussie Smollett sentenced to 150 days in prison, justice for Trump supporters everywhere

Actor Jussie Smollett attempted to impugn supporters of former President Donald Trump with his hate crime hoax. Now he’s going to jail.

Smollett was fined and sentenced Thursday to 150 days in prison for staging a racist and homophobic attack on himself and lying to Chicago police, the Washington Examiner reported. Still, the former “Empire” actor maintained his innocence in court.

In addition to the prison time and fines, Cook County Judge James Linn sentenced Smollett to 30 months of criminal probation. The judge also ordered Smollett to pay $120,106 restitution to the city of Chicago for money wasted on the bogus investigation.

The judge had strong words for Smollett, who has advocated for social justice and comes from a biracial background. “For you now to sit here, convicted of hoaxing, hate crimes … the hypocrisy is just astounding,” Linn admonished him.

Family and high-profile friends came to Smollett’s defense while the actor refused to admit any wrongdoing despite his conviction. “I am innocent. I could have said I am guilty a long time ago,” the actor said as he was being led out of the courtroom.

In December, a jury found Smollett guilty on five of the six felony disorderly conduct charges stemming from the staged attack. The actor had paid two brothers he knew from his time on the set of “Empire,” which was filmed in Chicago, to carry out the charade.

He paid them and also gave them money to buy props like rope and ski masks to carry out the fake attack. Smollett instructed the brothers to yell racial and homophobic slurs and shout that he was in “MAGA Country” in an apparent attempt to frame Trump supporters.

Smollett deserves to pay every penny and serve every day of his punishment for what he did. Hate crimes are abhorrent, but Smollett faked his own for attention while leaving open the possibility that innocent people would go to jail for his hoax.
