Journalist Barbara Starr departs CNN after two decades

Journalist Barbara Starr is leaving CNN after more than two decades with the network, The Hill reports

Starr announced that she is leaving in a memo that she sent on Friday to her fellow colleagues at CNN.

According to CNN, Starr wrote:

To my many colleagues and friends, With the expiration of my contract in the coming days I have made the decision to move on. Let me say this…you never say goodbye to your friends, so I won’t.

It appears as though this is the entirety of the memo.

According to The Hill, Starr, during her time at CNN, mostly served as the network's Pentagon correspondent, and thus, covered stories focusing on military and defense issues. To do so, Starr made trips to such countries as Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq, among others.

Readers, though, might remember Starr better for a headline-grabbing incident that occurred in 2021.

Deadline reports:

In 2021, it was revealed that the Justice Department under President Donald Trump obtained a gag order that kept top CNN executives from disclosing the government’s pursuit of reporter Barbara Starr email and other records as part of an apparent leak investigation. She and reporters from The Washington Post and The New York Times were informed that the government had seized their records without their knowledge.

Based on the memo that Starr sent to her colleagues, it appears that she is trying to treat her departure from CNN as her own decision.

But, CNN - which is under new management - is currently letting go of numerous employees. Chris Licht, CNN's new CEO, isn't just letting go of low-level employees either.

The Daily Beast reports that among those who have been let go are Christ Cilliza, the politics reporter and editor-at-large; correspondents Alison Kosik, Alexandra Field, and Martin Savidge; Mary Anne Fox, the vice president of northeast news; and more.

The Daily Beast further reports:

CNN will end all live programming on sister network HLN, resulting in the cancellation of the long-running morning program Morning Express. The show’s anchor, Robin Meade, who has been with the network since 2001, and other HLN hosts will lose their jobs. Additionally, the network has also parted ways with several paid on-air contributors, reportedly including New Yorker staff writer Susan Glasser and Politico reporter Jonathan Martin.

It appears that Licht isn't finished yet either.

The specifics regarding the departure of Starr remain unclear.

But, put in context, it appears that CNN made the decision to let her go.
