Texas is enacting some of the most freed0m-forward laws in the nation. President Joe Biden and his administration are doing all they can to stop them.
Biden’s Justice Department filed suit Thursday to block two key elections security measures in a new Texas law, TheBlaze reported. The provisions would require voter ID and restrict who can help voters fill out ballots.
The DOJ claims that a provision limiting who can help voters fill out their ballots is a violation of the Voting Rights Act. The department claims it amounts to disenfranchisement for those “with limited English proficiency [or] disabilities, elderly voters, members of the military deployed away from home, and American citizens residing outside of the country.”
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland released a statement explaining the rationale for the lawsuit. “Our democracy depends on the right of eligible voters to cast a ballot and to have that ballot counted,” Garland wrote. “The Justice Department will continue to use all the authorities at its disposal to protect this fundamental pillar of our society.”
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded that it would be up to a judge. “Biden is coming after Texas for SB1, our recently enacted election integrity law,” Paxton said. “It’s a great and a much-needed bill. Ensuring Texas has safe, secure, and transparent elections is a top priority of mine,” he added.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is not backing down from this fight. “One thing that all Texans can agree [on] and that is that we must have trust and confidence in our elections,” he said at the signing party. “The bill that I’m about to sign helps to achieve that goal. The law does however make it harder for fraudulent votes to be cast,” Abbot said.
The Republican governor is no stranger to being a Biden administration target. His heartbeat law, which bans abortions at around six weeks based on the presence of fetal cardiac activity, may make it to the Supreme Court with hopes of overturning Roe v. Wade, Fox News reported.
The people of Texas deserve free and fair elections, and that’s what Abbott is trying to ensure. For some reason, Democrats can’t allow that to happen, however.
