Joe Biden signs "Respect for Marriage Act" codifying same-sex marriage

President Joe Biden celebrated the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, ironically named as it codified same-sex marriage, in a public ceremony at the White House Tuesday, the Daily Wire reported. Invitees included drag queens who had previously performed their provocative routines in front of children.

"Today is a good day!" Biden said at the signing. "A day America takes a vital step toward equality, toward liberty and justice, not just for some, but for everyone – toward creating a nation, decency, dignity, and love are recognized, honored, and protected."

The bill was a bipartisan effort meant to enshrine the protections afforded to same-sex couples in the 2015 Obergfell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision. "This legislation is the latest step in House Democrats' fight to win full equality for LGBTQ Americans and forge a more perfect union that our children, and their children … all of our children deserve," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said at the time.

The Respect for Marriage Act requires a "person acting under color of State law" to recognize these unions even in states where they are not legal. They are also to be recognized by the federal government.

Predictably, the left was ecstatic about the assault on traditional marriage and the threat such a law poses to religious liberty. Despite bipartisan support, some Republican lawmakers rightly pointed out the problems the law creates.

"Without robust protections in place, federal recognition of same-sex marriage could — read against the backdrop of various federal statutes and the way they have been interpreted by the Supreme Court — inflict harm on those who, for reasons rooted in sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction, do not embrace same-sex marriage," Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) wrote. Legal experts admit it's a "legitimate risk."

However, as if to take a victory lap in the face of those worried about the proliferation of perversion, many of the elites in the nation's capital turned out for the signing ceremony. Some of the celebrated guests included musicians like has-been singer Cyndi Lauper and Sam Smith, the English singer and songwriter who identifies as "nonbinary."

However, the most noteworthy guests were the men who dress up in women's clothing and perform burlesque for a living, including notorious drag queen Marti Gould Cummings. "To be a nonbinary drag artist invited to the White House is something I never imagined would happen," he posted on Instagram.

"Thank you President & Dr. Biden for inviting me to this historic bill signing," he added. "Grateful doesn't begin to express the emotions I feel."

In 2019, Cummings was made famous after he posted a video of himself performing the song "Baby Shark" for a toddler while in full drag, according to Fox News. The post went viral and added fuel to the backlash against such events.

"Anyone who thinks drag isn't for children is wrong," Cummings tweeted at the time following the video. "Drag is expression, and children are such judgment-free beings; they don't really care what you're wearing, just what you're performing," he added.

The performer is also vehemently anti-police, a position that the Democratic Party has sought to distance itself from. In his failed 2020 run for New York City Council, the performer made defunding police part of his official platform.

Also at the ceremony in full drag was Brita Filter, who was embroiled in a scandal after he was invited by the Grace Church School in Manhattan to perform during services at its chapel, the Washington Times reported. The posh New York City school educates students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.

It's difficult to overstate how disturbing and disheartening this situation is. This law is a threat to religious liberty, but these invited guests point to an even deeper divide in our nation and what that means for how it protects our children.
