Joe Biden promises that he will be "shutting down" coal plants all over the nation

President Joe Biden said he will be "shutting down" coal plants "all across America" amid a burgeoning energy crisis and a stalled economy, Fox Business reported. The president said this Friday at an event in Carlsbad, California.

"I was in Massachusetts about a month ago on the site of the largest old coal plant in America," Biden said "Guess what? It cost them too much money," he claimed.

"They can't count. No one is building new coal plants because they can't rely on it," Biden added.

"Even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of the existence of the plant," the president said. "So it's going to become a wind generation," he claimed.

"And all they're doing is it's going to save them a hell of a lot of money, and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power, also providing tax credits to help families buy energy-efficient appliances, whether it's your refrigerator or your coffee maker, for solar panels on your home, weatherize your home, things that save an average, experts say, a minimum of $500 a year for the average family," Biden claimed. He also said it was "cheaper to generate electricity from wind and solar than it is from coal and oil."

"Literally cheaper," Biden said. "Not a joke," he added.

The energy sector has been struggling on many fronts, not the least of which is a shrinking workforce. Coal industry jobs shrunk by 11.8% from last year, with workers losing 7,125 jobs as Biden apparently targeted more.

The fossil fuel industry also lost some 31,593 jobs last year, leading to a year-over-year loss of 6.4%. "The DOE jobs report is not only reflective of the broader pandemic slowdown but also highlights an Administration that has worked overtime on restricting American natural gas and oil production," Jennifer Marsteller, Independent Petroleum Association of America spokesperson, said.

It's no surprise that Biden is targeting jobs in the energy sector. During the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden promised to shut down coal and was flippant about the workers' futures.

"Anybody who can go down 300-3,000 feet in a mine sure as hell can learn how to program as well," Biden told coal miners from a campaign event in New Hampshire. "But we don't think of it that way. Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God's sake."

While Biden and the Democrats tout the future of renewables, fossil fuels are in short supply and expensive in the present, where they're a vital part of survival. Instead, one of his first orders of business was canceling the Keystone XL pipeline that would have shored up America's energy independence.

Perhaps coal plants will naturally fall away as experts develop cleaner and more efficient energy sources. However, Biden seems gleeful about robbing people of jobs and shutting down energy production at a time when our nation simply can't afford it.
