Joe Biden pledges to sell $1.1 billion in military equipment to Taiwan

President Joe Biden has been floundering when it comes to foreign policy. However, he recently pledged support to a friendly nation that was owed to it.

Biden told Congress Friday that he has pledged to sell $1.1 billion worth of military equipment to Taiwan, the Washington Examiner reported. The island nation is seeking support against China's recent saber-rattling, but the move could increase tensions between China and the U.S.

The deal would include up to 100 air-to-air missiles and 60 air-to-sea missiles. The administration also proposed a $655 million in logistics support for its surveillance radar system.

"Consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States makes available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable it to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability," a State Department spokesman told CNN. This did not sit well with Chinese leaders.

"It sends wrong signals to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and severely jeopardizes China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington Liu Pengyu reportedly said. "China will resolutely take legitimate and necessary counter-measures in light of the development of the situation."

Tensions have been heightened since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last month that ruffled feathers in Bejing. After her visit, China conducted military exercises near the island while the U.S. sent Navy ships through the Taiwan Strait, Reuters reported.

The situation is precarious for all nations involved as China regards Taiwan as its territory, and the island wishes to remain independent. The U.S. has an alliance with Taiwan, pledging protection and support against the predations of the communist nation.

Biden has projected nothing but weakness in his short tenure, and that has emboldened adversaries like China. It's a good thing that he's pledging material help to Taiwan, but even that is undermined by his failure to effectively dissuade the world's dangerous actors like Xi Jinping.
