Joe Biden had classified docs marked 'top secret' in contrast to initial claims by Democrats

According to a new report from CBS News, some of the classified documents discovered to be in President Joe Biden's possession were marked "top secret."

There have now been three batches of confidential documents found in Biden's possession.

The first batch was reportedly discovered at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, Biden's Washington D.C. "think tank."

The documents, which are from Biden's time as vice president,  are said to have been discovered by Biden's lawyers just before the 2022 midterm elections.

The two other batches of classified documents were discovered at Biden's residence in Wilmington, Delaware - a residence which Biden's son, Hunter Biden, has claimed to own. One batch was found in the garage, while the other batch was found inside the residence.

According to CBS News, the "top secret" documents were discovered among those at the Penn Biden Center.

The outlet reports, "the approximately 10 documents marked classified and discovered at the Penn Biden Center included top-secret material, according to a federal law enforcement official familiar with the investigation."

The documents found at the Penn Biden Center are said to have contained intelligence about Iran, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. The intelligence is reported to date from a period between 2013 and 2016.

CBS continues, "Top secret is the highest of the three basic levels of classification: confidential, secret and top secret. A leak of top secret information could cause "exceptionally grave damage."

No "top secret" documents, according to the outlet, were found at Biden's Wilmington, Delaware, residence.

A Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation has been launched into this scandal, and the investigation has been upgraded to a special counsel investigation by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, with their new majority, have also launched an investigation into the matter.

The whole situation is garnering even more attention than it otherwise might because it comes amid the DOJ's targeting of former President Donald Trump for also having classified documents in his possession. Critics are pointing to a significant disparity between the two cases by the DOJ, noting, among other things, that the DOJ has yet to raid Biden's residences, whereas the FBI raided Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

Biden and his team have tried to differentiate the two situations by claiming that Biden has handled the discovery of the classified documents properly while Trump hasn't. As more and more information comes to light, though, it is becoming more apparent that what Biden did might just be a more serious violation of the laws regarding the handling of classified materials.
