Joe Biden flips on oil and gas leases, will begin grants for public land use amid sky high fuel prices

Americans are facing inflation that is out of control, especially when it comes to energy prices. Despite President Joe Biden’s initial reluctance to do anything about it, it now appears help may be on the way.

The Department of the Interior will once again be granting leases to drill for oil and gas on public lands, Fox News reported. Previously, the administration’s radical climate change agenda had stalled this important and necessary program.

The Bureau of Land Management said it will make leases available on “approximately 173 parcels on roughly 144,000 acres, an 80 percent reduction from the acreage originally nominated.” The BLM will issue sale notices for the drilling and necessary environmental impact assessments as of Monday.

This is good news for consumers but even better news for Biden. The president is facing a political bloodbath if he doesn’t fix economic issues tied closely to soaring oil prices that have Americans paying more at the pump and downstream price hikes on goods.

In the first days of his presidency, Biden made it his mission to effectively shut down drilling by cutting off the leases on federal land as well as offshore. Many could see the writing on the wall in terms of impact on energy prices, but Biden was unconcerned until political expediency required it.

Still, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland issued a caveat with the announcement of the new leases. “How we manage our public lands and waters says everything about what we value as a nation,” she said in a statement.

“For too long, the federal oil and gas leasing programs have prioritized the wants of extractive industries above local communities, the natural environment, the impact on our air and water, the needs of Tribal Nations, and, moreover, other uses of our shared public lands,” Haaland asserted. The proposed leases would be spread among many states, including Alabama, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming.

Biden must do something to curtail rising gas and oil prices, and allowing domestic drilling is a major step. However, it’s difficult to trust that this is a long-term strategy considering Biden’s lofty environmental agenda that includes ridding the world of fossil fuels.
