Joe Biden finally sending troops to the southern border to stop flow of drugs

President Joe Biden will allow for troops to be deployed to the border to stop the flow of illegal drugs like fentanyl, meth, and cocaine, the Daily Caller reported. Biden did this through an executive order Thursday.

The heads of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense now have the ability to activate the reservists and deploy them to the border. Both DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin were authorized to activate Ready Reserve forces as needed to combat the "international drug trafficking" problem.

This is part of a broader effort to brace for a renewed influx of illegal aliens coming over the border.  Title 42, which allowed the government to turn away migrants based on COVID-19 public health concerns, will expire next month.

Officials are expecting the problem to degrade into an all-out crisis with the rules change, Fox News reported. To deal with the onslaught, the Biden administration is setting up migrant processing centers in Colombia and Guatemala.

‘This is a hemispheric challenge that demands hemispheric solutions," Mayorkas told reporters at a news conference. "Working with our neighbors in the region, we can and will reduce the number of migrants who reach our southern border."

These centers will be run by "international organization partners" and will streamline the refugee process. The administration has also increased the cap on refugee admissions from 15,000 per year to 125,000.

Migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela, and Haiti are allowed to participate in a family reunification program that allows for parole. The administration wants to expand that to El Salvador, Honduras, and Colombia.

Still, Mayorkas has admitted that Title 42's expiration is going to be an issue even with proper preparation. "Notwithstanding those preparations, we do expect that encounters at or southern border will increase as smugglers are seeking to take advantage of this change and already hard at work spreading misinformation that the border will be open after that," he said.

This kind of admission is significant and comes as New York City Mayor Eric Adams complained last week that his city has been "destroyed" by illegal immigration, the New York Post reported. He has repeatedly taken aim at the Biden administration and will appeal for federal assistance in dealing with the overwhelming problem.

Adams said Biden was ignoring "one of the largest humanitarian crises that this city has ever experienced" in remarks on April 19. "The national government has turned its back on New York City," Adams complained.

"Every service in this city is going to be impacted by the asylum seeker crisis," he added. Adams also blamed other New York City officials during his remarks later that week at the African American Mayors Association panel discussion.

"The city is being destroyed by the migrant crisis," Adams said. "And none of my folks came to Washington DC to fight for the resources that’s going to undermine every agency in our city," he complained about city officials as well.

However, Adams is mostly alone as other Democrats won't get involved in a conflict with Biden before his reelection bid begins in earnest, political consultant Hank Sheinkopf assessed. "They cannot criticize an incumbent president, which is what Adams has done this week," Sheinkopf said. "They’re thinking: You never come back from attacking the president of your own party."

This executive order is a good start to remedying the problem. However, sending troops should have been the option of last resort rather than the first viable thing Biden has tried.
