Joe Biden delivers 'Christmas address,' fails to mention Jesus by name

President Joe Biden on Thursday delivered what the White House billed as a “Christmas address,” but in doing so, made the highly curious decision to avoid any direct references to Jesus by name, crossing a line for countless conservatives across America, as the Daily Wire reports.

Referencing the reason for the season, Biden remarked, “How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is given. There is a certain stillness at the center of the Christmas story.”

“A silent night when all the world goes quiet and all the glamour, all the noise, everything that divides us, everything that pits us against one another, everything – everything that seems so important but really isn't, this all fades away in stillness of the winter's evening,” Biden continued, foreshadowing the broader call for unity he would later make in his speech.

The president went on, eventually uttering the sentence that gave millions of faithful Americans pause, namely, “And we look to the sky, to a lone star, shining brighter than all the rest, guiding us to the birth of a child – a child Christians believe to be the son of God,” omitting any specific reference to the name Jesus whatsoever.

That Biden – who has frequently professed his own devout Catholicism – would speak with great feeling about Christmas without mentioning Jesus by name took many by surprise, and not in a positive way.

Among those perplexed by the move was Father Gerald Murray of the Archdiocese of New York, who told Newsmax, according to Newsweek, that it made “no sense.”

“President Biden is always talking about his Catholicism and how it inspired him. If you're going to honor the birth of Jesus, you should mention his name. I was very sad to see that. That's not anything that should be imitated in the future,” Murray said.

Kara Frederick of the Heritage Foundation was similarly alarmed by the speech, saying that the absence of the name Jesus from Biden's speech was a “manifestation” of the nation's movement away from “Judeo-Christian” principles.

“America's lost its sense of God, its Judeo-Christian values, and I think this is just a manifestation. This speech not mentioning Christ, talking about how divided this nation's been for so long, it's all part and parcel of the secularization of America and we need to return to our faith,” Frederick said.

Well-known Hollywood producer and director Kevin Sorbo said he was not terribly shocked that Biden's speech had such a glaring omission, given that he routinely claims to be a proud Catholic while simultaneously advocating for abortion,” as Newsweek further noted.

Former Congressman Doug Collins, a Republican from Georgia, expressed his frustration with the president during an appearance Friday on Fox News.

“Not saying the same of Jesus – look, there are other holidays to celebrate, but Christmas is the birth of Christ. When we celebrate the birth of Christ who came and gave us the gift of life. That's what we celebrate and to take that out is just sad,” Collins observed.

The omission of Jesus' name was not the only problem many critics had with Biden's speech. Several critics lambasted his repeated calls for unity over partisanship as rather hypocritical in light of the role he and his Democrat Party allies have played in stoking hatred and division over the past two years.

Chad Gilmartin, spokesperson for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) aptly made the point by asking the rhetorical question, “How does Joe Biden get away with this phony unity rhetoric after he smeared half the country as domestic terrorists and compared anyone who opposes his radical agenda to segregationists?”
