Joe Biden continues war on home appliances by targeting air conditioners

According to Fox News, President Joe Biden and his administration are now looking to implement a crackdown on air conditioners.

That's right: first, the Biden administration came for your gas stoves, clothes washers, and refrigerators - and now it is coming for your air conditioners.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the crackdown on air conditioners on Thursday. It did so in a press release, titled, "DOE Finalizes Efficiency Rules for Room Air Conditioners and Portable Air Cleaners."

The press release states:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today finalized new energy efficiency standards for room air conditioners—commonly known as window air conditioners—and portable air cleaners that will reduce household energy costs and significantly cut pollution.

Clearly, this is in furtherance of the political left's climate change agenda. But, the Biden administration is trying to sell it to the people by claiming the crackdown on air conditioners will save them money.

The press release continues:

DOE expects these standards to save American families and consumers approximately $1.5 billion per year on their electricity bills and decrease harmful carbon dioxide emissions by 106 million metric tons over 30 years—an amount roughly equivalent to the combined annual emissions of 13.4 million homes.

The DOE goes on to claim that "the new rules to save consumers more than $25 billion over the ensuing 30 years," with households saving about "$150 over the average life of" a new air conditioner or portable air cleaner unit.

The question, of course, is "at what cost?"

Higher-priced appliances and, perhaps, less effective air conditioner units are two possibilities.

For U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm, however, the possible benefits outweigh the likely costs.

"Today’s announcement builds on the historic actions President Biden took last year to strengthen outdated energy efficiency standards, which will help save on people’s energy bills and reduce our nation’s carbon footprint," Granholm said in a statement regarding the crackdown on air conditioners.

Granholm added, "[the] DOE will continue to engage with our public and private sector partners to finalize additional proposals like today’s that lower household energy costs and deliver the safer, healthier communities that every American deserves."

The new rules take effect in 2024 for air cleaners and in 2026 for air conditioners.

Time will tell how this all plays out. But, this smells a lot like government overreach, which is one of the few things that the Biden administration is proving to be particularly adept at.
