Joe Biden caught attempting to end Trump-era immigration policy contrary to court orders

Title 42 allows the government to turn illegal immigrants away due to public health concerns. The tug of war over this useful provision continues even as the situation at the border grows more desperate.

Republicans are calling on President Joe Biden to keep Title 42 and apply it to stop the flow of deadly fentanyl, Breitbart reported. However, the administration has been attempting to end the Trump-era border protection despite court orders not to.

Former President Donald Trump had implemented Title 42 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It allowed Border Patrol to send migrants back to Mexico rather than allow them to wait in the U.S. and possibly spread the virus.

The Biden administration had promised to end the program effective May 23 until a judge blocked it. Now the GOP is urging Biden to use it to stem the tide of fentanyl which accounted for a large share of overdose deaths in the U.S. last year.

“The drugs and gang members — and the accompanying violence — then flood into our American communities,” Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) pointed out last month in a speech on the Senate floor. “As one [Border Patrol] agent put it, the people crossing the border don’t stay in this area, and neither do the drugs.”

“More than 100,000 Americans died last year from drug overdoses — mostly from fentanyl — which are really more akin to Chinese Communist Party-engineered poisonings,” Hagerty added. This problem is particularly acute near the border in a place like Riverside County, California, which saw an 800% increase in fentanyl deaths in the last five years.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) concurred with Hagerty. “We should use Title 42 to enforce that public health emergency because it is a public health emergency,” Ernst said.

Biden should use every tool at his disposal, both to stop illegal immigration and to rid the nation of harmful drugs. Instead, he’s fighting tooth and nail against these commonsense measures and once again proving he’s unfit for office.
