Joe Biden announces new border plan - but is it too little, too late?

The Washington Examiner reports that President Joe Biden has just unveiled a new plan to address the southern border crisis.

This crisis began before Biden even entered the White House when, as a presidential candidate, he signaled that he would repeal then-President Donald Trump's immigration policies. The crisis only grew worse during the past two years after he entered the White House and delivered on his promise.

Fox News reports, "there were more than 2.3 million migrant encounters in FY 2022 alone, topping the then-historic 1.7 million encountered in FY 2021."

According to the outlet, things aren't getting any better in Fiscal Year 2023. Fox continues:

So far in FY 2023, which began in October, the first two months have outpaced the same period last year — with 233,740 encounters in November, compared to 174,845 in 2021 and 73,994 in 2020.

Biden and his administration have faced significant criticism over their mishandling of the southern border. The administration, however, has mostly ignored this criticism. Many, on the contrary, even claimed that the southern border is secure.

Recently, however, some well-known Democrats, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), joined in the criticism. This occurred during the recent legal battle over Title 42, the Trump-era emergency measure that has been used to expel illegal immigrants from the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, Biden is going to do something that he has thus far refused to do - namely, visit the southern border to see the problem with his own eyes. And, on top of this, Biden has put forth a plan that he claims will help to address these problems.

One big part of this plan is the expansion of Title 42, so as to allow the Biden administration to expel up to 30,000 individuals per month via Mexico. It's a surprising move considering that Biden has been trying, unsuccessfully, to get rid of Title 42.

On top of this, Biden's plan includes an alternative expedited removal process for those illegal immigrants who cannot be removed from the U.S. under Title 42 and who do not claim asylum.

Biden, under his plan, is also going to expand a program that will allow 30,000 individuals per month, from the countries of Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba, and Nicaragua, to be paroled into the U.S. for a two-year period. These individuals must meet certain requirements, such as having a financial sponsor, and they cannot enter the program if they attempted to gain access to the U.S. illegally.

There are more aspects to Biden's plan, which can be viewed in its entirety here.

"These actions alone that I'm going to announce today aren't going to fix our entire immigration system, but they can help us a good deal in managing what is a difficult challenge," Biden claims.

Whether Biden's plan will help at all remains to be seen.

Critics remain skeptical and argue that Biden's recent actions are likely little more than political posturing designed to save face with Americans while appeasing his base by allowing illegal immigration to continue. We'll see.
