Jan. 6 committee makes last ditch attempt to get Donald Trump

With the midterm elections in sight, it appears that the Democrats' Jan. 6 House committee is finally coming to an end after having failed to accomplish its obvious goal of bringing former President Donald Trump down.

The Hill, though, reports that the committee, in its final moments, is making one last-ditch attempt to goad the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) into criminally charging or at least investigating Trump.

That last-ditch attempt came during the recent hearing held by the highly-partisan committee. If one likens what is going on to a judicial proceeding - which it is not, since the opposing side never was allowed to present its evidence or to cross-examine witnesses - then the committee just put forth its closing arguments.

The Hill reports that, in these "closing arguments," the members of the committee "repeatedly mentioned Trump's motivation, intent, or state of mind." The Hill explains the significance of this noting these are the "elements prosecutors would need to demonstrate if they choose to pursue charges against Trump."

There are no signs, however, as of yet that the DOJ has any intention of prosecuting Trump. And there are likely a large number of reasons for this, the most notable of which is that there is simply no clear evidence indicating that Trump committed a crime.

It is also worth pointing out that the House committee has not even sent a criminal referral to the DOJ for Trump. They have only hinted at the possibility of doing so. Surely, if the committee members were that confident that Trump had committed a crime, they would have sent such a referral by now.

In addition to their "closing arguments," the committee also made one other final move: it voted to subpoena Trump.

Trump responded with a 14-page statement slamming the committee. The statement suggested that Trump would not be complying with the subpoena, but Trump didn't say so explicitly.

Overall, it looks as though the committee will finally be coming to a close without the grand finale that the Democrats were hoping for.
