James Clyburn convinced Joe Biden is shoe-in for 2024, actively discouraging Democrats from seeking alternatives

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) firmly believes President Joe Biden will run for re-election in 2024, Breitbart reported. The influential House Democrat and Biden adviser is so confident, he's discouraged his party from offering up alternatives.

Clyburn was asked in a CBS News interview Wednesday whether he was confident that the 80-year-old would run again. "Yes, I am," he told host Robert Costa.

The South Carolina Democrat was instrumental in Biden's 2020 Democratic primary win and has been in party leadership for several years. Clyburn said he's advised Biden to "announce for reelection" several times as the 2024 presidential election looms on the horizon.

He also lauded Biden for getting "more progressive legislation than any president since Lyndon Baines Johnson" passed in his short time as president. "I’m all in for President Biden," Clyburn said.

As if that was enough of a vote of confidence, Clyburn discouraged others in the party from trying to unseat the incumbent president in the primary. He used the cautionary tale of the 1980 election when then-Sen. Ted Kennedy's challenge to the incumbent President Jimmy Carter shook up the Democratic Party.

"The history is very clear on what happens when you challenge a sitting president like this," Clyburn said. Kennedy attempted to take the nomination away from Carter during the Democratic convention, Politico reported.

On the first night, Kennedy's supporters failed to turn it into an open convention where they could replace Carter. Rather than give up, delegates pushed far-left agenda items in an attempt to upset Carter's moderate platform.

It was not a good look for the party, and Republican challenger Ronald Reagan went on to win the presidency in a landslide. Clyburn is right to fear a repeat, though it's not clear whether that will even be necessary.

Biden has not officially launched his re-election bid but will likely do so following the State of the Union address next month, NBC News reported. "We want him to be a president at State of the Union, not a candidate," a source close to the matter claimed.

However, that might not be a problem if the scandal over Biden's mishandling of classified documents continues to snowball. Last week, reports emerged that these sensitive documents were found at the Penn Biden Center in Washington,  D.C., as well as in Biden's Delaware home, Fox News reported.

The president has yet to answer for himself and has routinely ignored journalists' questions about it -- except for one exchange that worked against him. When Fox News' Peter Doocy pushed Biden on his revelations that he stored classified documents in a garage, the president doubled down to his disadvantage.

"By the way, my Corvette is in a locked garage," he claimed by way of an explanation for why he would leave sensitive materials in his garage. That certainly did not help his case.

The timing of this burgeoning scandal is curious, considering long-simmering feelings that the Democrats want Biden out. He's old, he's feeble, and he's unpopular -- and everyone in the party know it.

Clyburn believes in Biden and wants to discourage party ugliness like the Kennedy and Carter situation, but that may not be the way it plays out. If Biden is forced to resign over this scandal, it would be just the clean break Democrats need to switch candidates.
