Readers of the once-conservative breaking news aggregator “The Drudge Report” might have been shocked to find the headline “Roger Stone Set For Pardon?” on its front page today.
But that was just the start. Just a few hours ago, President Trump retweeted a petition to pardon Stone.
IT’s TIME TO #PardonRogerStone,” the original tweet read.
Stone appeared on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” yesterday and hinted that big developments were in the works:
I have filed an appeal both of my conviction and of – of the separately an appeal on juror misconduct of a decision by Judge Jackson not to grant me a new trial. And the president who was on with Sean Hannity last night was right. I have a very strong appeal, and there’s a good chance that I could win if I got a new trial. I could be exonerated. But that will take a year, and there is no prospect that I will be left free in that time. So at this juncture, Lou, only either a decision to delay to September 3, as I have requested so that the COVID-19 situation is clarified or an Act of Clemency by the president will prevent my incarceration next Tuesday.
As Andrew McCarthy put it:
The Stone prosecution is more politics than law enforcement. It was the Mueller probe’s last gasp at pretending there might be something to the Russia-collusion narrative – notwithstanding that, when the “gee, it sure feels like there could be some collusion here” indictment was filed, over a year and a half after special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed, it had long been manifest that there was no Trump–Russia conspiracy.
Roger Stone is a victim of injustice. Will President Trump do the right thing and pardon him?
