Democrats are notoriously terrible at containing threats to the U.S. Now President Joe Biden is doubling down on a strategy that has already failed at preventing a nuclear Iran.
Biden has warned officials to “be prepared” for trouble with Iran after months of secret diplomatic talks have gone nowhere, Fox News reported. Despite his efforts, it appears Iran is going forward with a nuclear weapons program.
Under former President Barack Obama, the U.S. brokered a 2015 deal with Iran called the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” and Biden was his vice president at the time, The Hill reported. Essentially, it asked for the hostile nation to pinky promise not to make nuclear weapons if they were allowed to continue a nuclear power program — a promise that they quickly ignored.
Now, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a news briefing that the administration was still pursuing diplomatic options to quash Iran’s nuclear weapons development. She also outlined the next steps if the nation continued to toward a nuclear weapons program.
“Given the ongoing advances in Iran’s nuclear program the president has asked his team to be prepared in the event that diplomacy fails,” Psaki told reporters Thursday. “We must turn to other options and that requires preparations,” she said.
“We have made clear to Iran that the only path out of sanctions is through nuclear compliance,” she said. Paski noted that sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump’s administration on the nation would remain for the time being.
“If diplomacy cannot get on track soon and if Iran’s nuclear program continues to accelerate, then we will have no choice but to take additional measures to further restrict Iran’s revenue-producing sectors,” Psaki said. Though she tried to talk tough, the track record for this administration’s weakness means they’ll likely do very little.
Biden is recycling the same failed policies of the administration he previously served. However, this time it’s worse since the evidence is clear that Iran is pushing forward with a nuclear weapons program — and talking to them really nicely won’t do anything to stop it.
